Going Green with IT? You Bet!
by David Moorman, President
Not only can managed IT services and a Software-as-a-Service setup save your company money you would spend buying and maintaining servers and computer hardware, it also can help save the environment.
“Going green” is all the rage at companies large and small, and a managed-services arrangement offers real savings in an apples-to-apples comparison versus in-house IT services. It also can free up IT personnel to perform higher-level functions that can improve the way you do business, help you identify new customers and leverage your company data with greater precision.
But the environmental savings can add up quickly for your company and your employees.
Here are just a few reasons how:
-- By not having physical servers at your location, utility costs will be lower. Sure, someone has to pay the electric bill to keep data rooms cool and servers humming, but centralized data storage allows for a highly efficient environment where overall costs are less.
-- Accessing software and data through a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) arrangement means that employees can work from anywhere, which increases productivity and allows telework arrangements. Employees can check e-mail, access company files, collaborate with co-workers, check inventory levels and more from home, a hotel, a coffee shop—anywhere there’s an Internet connection.
--Workers can reduce both fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by working at home. That also applies to IT service personnel since nearly any issue that could crop up can be settled remotely.
--A managed-services environment extends the life of PCs since all applications are hosted in the data center, eliminating the capital expense required to purchase super-speedy PCs to handle increasingly memory-hungry applications.
So when you consider managed services, think about not only the dollar savings and increased productivity but also what you can do to help save the planet.
